Anjuli Byrd Goes to Space Camp
Anjuli Byrd, a Burlington native who
graduated from Hunt Middle School and who is currently a freshman at
Burlington High School, was awarded a scholarship from the Society of
Women Engineers to attend the United States Space Camp in Huntsville,
Alabama in August 2005. To be eligible, Anjuli participated in the
Vermont State Science & Math Fair held in April 2005 at Norwich
University. Anjuli's Science Fair Team submitted a group project and
claimed two prizes: the Green Mountain Water Environment Association
Award and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources Award, both for
outstanding Water Quality Project for their Science Fair project
entitled "Garbage in Lake Champlain". To learn more about the SWE Space

2008 Award Ceremony Features
Former Science Fair Winner
The guest speaker this year at the VSSMF Awards ceremony will be Karen Hinkle,
Assistant Professor of Biology at Norwich University. She and her students are conducting nationally-funded
research on the sequential activation of genes in the parietal and chief cells of the gastric gland during
development in utero.
If anyone can make stomach acid fascinating, Dr. Hinkle can!

Exhibit Area Features Universities
and STEM Museums
The new Sullivan Museum and History Center will be
the focal point for students and parents to meet with representatives from a number of Vermont universities
to inquire about their STEM programs. In addition, there will be displays by all
four STEM museums in Vermont: ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center,
Montshire Museum, Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium, and American
Precision Museum. Teachers, parents, and students without
projects can visit the exhibits between 9:00am and 1:30pm. Science fair
participants can visit during lunch.
