SPECIFIC PRIZE CRITERIA

AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY: is the professional society for the study of weather. The two students judged to have the most creative project in atmospheric science will each receive a Certificate of Outstanding Achievement.

AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION: The APA Education Directorate and Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools recognizes outstanding research in psychology with a Certificate of Award.

AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MATERIALS INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION: recognizes the student judged to have the top project in materials science with a Certificate of Most Outstanding Exhibit and a medallion.

ASSOCIATION FOR WOMEN GEOSCIENTISTS: The female student judged to have the top project in geoscience will receive a Certificate of Student Awards for Geosciences Excellence.

DISCOVERY CHANNEL YOUNG SCIENTIST CHALLENGE: The top 10% of 7th and 8th grade projects in any area will be DCYSC nominee. These students must complete and return their entry booklet by an early June deadline to be considered entrants. Nominees will also receive certificates and lapel pins.

HERBERT HOOVER PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY ASSOCIATION: The student with the project that best demonstrates a grasp of engineering fundamentals and good communication skills will receive the Herbert Hoover Young Engineer Award Medallion and a Certificate of Merit.

INTEL EXCELLENCE IN COMPUTER SCIENCE AWARD: Intel hopes to increase the interest in computer science, one of today's fastest growing fields and an important source of innovation for the 21st century. The student with the project demonstrating the best use of computer science will receive an Intel Certificate of Excellence in Computer Science Award and $200.

INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR OPTICAL ENGINEERING: is dedicated to advancing scientific research and engineering applications of optical, photonic, imaging, and optoelectronic technologies. The student whose project demonstrates the best application of optics or photonics principles will receive an Award for Best Project and an entry into a drawing for $100.

MU ALPHA THETA: The National High School and Two-Year College Mathematics Club will award a Certificate of Award to the student whose project demonstrates the most challenging, thorough, and creative investigation of a problem involving modern mathematics.

NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION: will award a certificate to one student (middle o high school) whose research emphasizes NOAA's mission to understand and predict changes in the Earth's environment and conserve and manage coastal and marine resources to meet our nation's economic, social, and environmental needs.

NATIONAL SOCIETY OF PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS: will award a Certificate of Achievement, a lapel pin and a one year's subscription to Engineering Times to the student with the most outstanding engineering project.

THE REGIONAL RICOH SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AWARD - goes to the one individual or team entry, selected from among all the general award categories whose principles and technical innovations offer the greatest potential for increasing our ability to grow environmentally friendly and socially responsible businesses.Winners of the regional Ricoh Sustainable Development Award receive a one-year subscription to Science News Magazine ($55). Award recipients and their sponsoring teachers are each eligible to win a Ricoh digital camera in an international drawing.

THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE: The four students whose projects each were judged to be the best project in the fields of engineering, environmental sciences, mathematics/computer science, life sciences, and physical sciences will receive a Certificate of Achievement, a portfolio, a memory stick, and a calculator.

THE UNITED STATES ARMY: The five students whose projects each were judged to be the best project in the fields of engineering, environmental sceinces, mathematics/computer science, life sciences, and physical sciences will receive a Certificate of Achievement, a Silver Medallion, and a U.S. Savings Bond (one $100 bond and four $50 bonds).

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES: The United States Department of Health and Human Services' U.S. Public Health Service will award a Certificate signed by the Surgeon General to the student with the project most creatively illustrating the "Steps to a Healthier US" initiative of the USPHS.


U.S. METRIC ASSOCIATION: will award a certificate to the student whose project involves a significant amount of quantitative measurement and which best uses the SI metric system for those measurements.

U.S. NAVY/MARINE CORPS: The Office of Naval Research (ONR) encourages the young scienctists and engineers of our country. ONR will award 2 to 10 certificates signed by the Chief of Naval Research (the exact number to be decided by the ONR before the Science Fair.

YALE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING ASSOCIATION: will award a Certificate and Pewter Medallion to the most outstanding 11th grade student exhibiting in the areas of computer science, engineering, physics, or chemistry.
